Winter Break 2010 Travel Documentary Film Competition

Have that dream to become a film director?

Know that your purpose in life is to inspire?

Now this is your chance to live that dream!

We would like to invite all of you who will be travelling this winter break to take part in our Winter Break 2010 Travel Documentary Film Competition. All you need to do is just grab a camera, start filming, edit it with a touch of personality and submit your documentaries to us!

Documentary film: is a broad category of visual expressions that is based on the attempt, in one sense or another, to “document” reality.

Participants’ submitted films will be judge based on these following criteria :

Enlightening / Inspiring
Clarity / Simplicity
Creativity / Originality
Substance (Accuracy / In depth / Variety)

The on screen duration of the film should not be more than 30 minutes.

There will be an exclusive prize giving ceremony to announce the winner among the top three participants who made it through the final cut, where the finalists’ masterpieces will be given the treatment that they rightfully deserve by showing them to the whole Malaysian community here in Irbid.
Prizes might be worth considering, but the best is your sense of achievement.

NO ADMITTANCE FEE!!!

“If you can shoot well, all you need is a camera phone, disposable or even a toy camera to produce a great picture. If you’re not talented, it doesn’t matter if you buy a Nikon D3X or Leica; your work will still be uninspired.”

IT IS NOT EXPECTED FOR PARTICIPANTS…

…to feel restricted to only document an exclusive destination; may it be that you are going back to Malaysia to spend time with your family or going bundle shopping in Balad, the sky is the limit.

… to adhere to any strict styles of filming a documentary; just grab a camcorder (or digital camera…etc.) and start filming, feel free to let your imaginations thrive.

… to own a Sony HVR-Z7U camcorder; as long as you have a device that can capture moving pictures (minimum requirement), you are good to go.

… to anticipate that experienced competing participants are going to win; film assessments are primarily focused on substance, not quality. So this ultimately narrows it down to the fact that…

…to only be the ones who have the knack for filmmaking; the evaluating committee’s jurisdiction ensures that everyone is on neutral grounds.

IT IS EXPECTED FOR PARTICIPANTS…

…to ask “What is a documentary film?”, “What are the basic fundamentals of filming a documentary?”, “What makes a good documentary?” and find answers; we took the initiative to gather a few short, simple but compelling documentaries for you to be inspired by, examples on how a documentary should be like.

Last but not least…

…to enjoy filming your documentaries; especially those who have always wanted to direct a film but never had the opportunity.

“To those who question whether clarity is all that important, I can only say that it is the most important quality in the making of a film. [...] just as important as clarification, I think, is the need to simplify. A film director must have a sense of simplification.”
François Truffaut
